Abstract

The Vaal Triangle comprising Sasolburg, Vanderbijlpark, and Vereeniging has been labelled the Ruhr area or hub of South African industry. Because of the area's relative isolation from the Central State Archives in Pretoria the Town Council of Vanderbijlpark, in conjunction with the University of Potchefstroom's Vaal River branch, has taken the initiative in establishing local archives. Care will be taken to conserve and store documents relating to the whole range of human activities in the Triangle. However, since industry is the central feature of the area, emphasis will be placed on collecting documents of a socio-economic nature. Among other things this will benefit inter-disciplinary research. The co-operation of individuals and institutions is essential if the archives are to be a success.
